Summary: A finalist in the International Percussive Arts Society International Convention (P.A.S.I.C.) Marching Marimba Competition (2002, 2004). an ensemble member of the M.T.S.U. P.A.S.I.C. Steel Band Ensemble (2001), A.S.U P.A.S.I.C. Contemporary Percussion Ensemble (2006), A.S.U Wind Ensemble performance at the American Bandmasters Association (2007), A.S.U. P.A.S.I.C African Drum Ensemble (2008), and at the North American Saxophone Alliance Regional II Conference (2011). M.T.S.U Percussion Ensemble received an invitation to the Day of Percussion in San Juan, Puerto Rico to premiere Rockin’ Rickie Rocket (2003) by Lalo Davila. Darrell spent two weeks in Sénégal, West Africa, in the summer of 2007, with Dr. Mark Sunkett to study Sabar drum traditions. In the Spring of 2010, the Amari Percussion Duo premiered Raymond Helble's Duo Concertante for Vibraphone and Marimba (2009) and Raymond D. Ridley's FyrStar (2009) for Vibraphone and Marimba with nine single reed instruments and percussion. He has performed with the Symphony of the Southwest (Mesa Symphony), West Valley Symphony, Grand Canyon Symphony, Arizona Opera, Phoenix Metropolitan Men’s Chorus, Salt River Brass, Mill Avenue Chamber Players, and Musica Nova. Darrell has participated in master classes with Leigh Howard Stevens, John Tafoya, Joseph Gramley, and Ed Harrison; applied lessons with Mrs. Rosa Adams-Bussard, Ms. Janice Leisenring, Ms. Jillian Baxter. Kevin Bobo, Dr. Julie Gaines, Dr. Steven Hemphill, and Ms. Janis Potter. Mr. Thompson had the honor and pleasure to adjudicate, master-classes, and clinics throughout Kansas, Missouri, Tennessee, and Arizona. He was an instructor for Momentum Percussion Theater (2005), assisted with the Arizona State University Indoor Percussion Ensemble, Murfreesboro Symphony Youth Orchestra, and the co-director of Steel de Boro at Reeves Rodgers elementary School in Murfreesboro, TN.
